How often we hear of youths who are struggling with pain being told they are just going through a phase…there is treatment and there is recovery in so many cases. Let’s Talk about mental health in your life, your family, your friends…the more we talk about our experiences, the more people and especially our youth will know it’s okay to get help. There is treatment, and there is recovery. This is a beautiful photo that tells a powerful story.
Photo taken by contributor P. McCormick, a 20-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio. She has been battling depression and anxiety since the age of 12. Her father has also suffered from depression secretly for over 20 years. He finally admitted to it and accepted help over the last year. Unfortunately he has still struggled and even attempted suicide recently. P’s father, mother, and younger siblings all now attend therapy. P. is scared of heading down a similarly destructive path as her father. She feels for him, but cannot bring herself to forgive him for denying his mental health issues for so many years (and blaming hers on teen angst), and how his denial has negatively impacted her mental health.
About this photo: “There is a balance of light and dark energy in all of us. Some days we lose the balance between the energies.”
